< ALL YOGIS PHOEBE VREELAND
Phoebe Vreeland has been a student of yoga since her twenties, and her practice has taken many forms over the last thirty years. She is grateful for her time spent studying and serving in ashrams and for the many gifted teachers in the Bay Area that support a householder yogi. She lives in Marin County with her daughter and spends her free time hiking the trails of Mount Tam.
“I feel most creative and inspired after I have been replenished by a walk in nature.”
Tell us when and how got you interested in yoga?
I was first introduced to yoga as a child by my father. I have early memories of him in headstand and sitting in meditation. Later in my twenties, hatha yoga helped me to embrace being embodied and led way to the other yoga practices that have provided a path for my seeking.
What do you consider the most challenging Asana?
As many teachers say, for me Savasana is the most difficult asana ~ to consciously relax and stay alert... No doing, no grasping. It also symbolically reminds me of the final letting go.
What's your favorite Asana?
Tadasana. I love the feeling of my feet grounding into the earth and my body lengthening skyward, rooting and rising.
What does meditation look like or mean to you?
Expanding my definition for what meditation has been a helpful shift. These days when quietude in nature stills my mind I am grateful. I am also content if I manage to mindfully wash the dishes.
When advice would you give to your younger self?
...and current motto: Life is long, pace yourself. Rest, don’t quit.
Is there something you'd like to learn?
Embracing uncertainty is what I would like to learn.
What brings you inspiration?
I feel most creative and inspired after I have been replenished by a walk in nature.
What brings you joy?
Hiking and iceskating bring me joy.
What can you not live without?
I can’t live without open space and undeveloped land.
When did you realize you were powerful?
I realized I was powerful giving birth to my daughter.
